Frequently Asked Questions
Can my intact male or female dog attend your facility?
Yes, we do allow intact males and females to come to our facility.  Dogs that are not spayed or neutered are NOT accepted into our general population for doggy daycare. For boarding, we mix the dogs based on their specific needs so we are able to separate intact males and females into groups that are suitable.
*Please note: we cannot take any intact females that are in heat into our facility for boarding or daycare visits of any kind.

Rates:
"How does your daily rate work?"
-Bookings are charged by the calendar day.  Each physical day your pet is at KPR will be a charge day.  We allow customers to pick up or drop off anytime within the two brackets of time during the day.  See our rates & hours page or our home page for those times.  Each pet has a private suite which is available to them for the entire day you check in and check out.  We realize that customers get delayed so we feel the safest way to offer our service is to allow the entire day for your pet so that you do not need to rush to pick them up in the morning to avoid paying that day rate.  We also do a full sanitization between each guest.  Our disinfectant needs to sit, be rinsed and dried.  This process does take time and as such turn around time on a boarding suite takes time.

Daily Routine for Boarding Dogs:
"What does a day look like for my dog when he/she stays overnight?"
-Every day we do the same routine for our guests which our boarding dogs learn quickly and helps them adjust to the environment.  Our staff arrive to the resort just before 7am.  The first 30 minutes prior to us opening up the business for our customers at 7:30am, we ensure all dogs have a chance to relieve themselves.  Some of our guests may "do their business" out in their patios and others need to be taken on a short walk around our yard.  While some of the staff are taking those dogs out for their morning rituals there are other staff that begin cleaning and sanitizing the suites.  Every dog gets a clean room and fresh water each morning.
After the rooms are tidied and fresh waters are set up we begin food prep for all guests for breakfast.  Typically breakfast is handed out anytime between 7:45am-8:15am each day.  The dogs are always pretty excited during this time of the morning.  They are ready to eat!
We hand out breakfast to all of the guests and then collect all of the bowls to be washed.  At that time the dogs have access to their outside run.
We have other cleaning jobs to do while our guests are resting after their meal.  Any dog visiting the resort must rest for a minimum of 60 minutes before, as well as 60 minutes after any meal for health and safety reasons.
Playtime usually begins between 9:00am-9:30am daily as that is when cleaning, feeding and that important rest time needed for our guests is complete.  Each day our team work together to plan play groups for our boarding guests.  We match up our guests based on their age, size and temperament.  It is not about the number of dogs that go out in each group, it is about the quality of playtime.  We also take into consideration the safety aspect for each group we create.  We strive daily for the dogs to have their "best day ever".  Some of our boarding guests do best on their own so we accommodate that for them and a "not mix" dog will still get one on one time with a KPR team member.  A discussion with each 'pawrent' at drop off, as well as our staff assessment will determine what is going to be the best fit for each dog during their stay.  All boarding dogs get out to play in the yard for a minimum of 20-30 minutes each day with our staff.  Energetic guests have the ability to go out for a second or third play group if time permits and when all dogs have had their turn.  We also realize that some of our senior guests will benefit from a bit of a slower style outside adventure. We strive to balance out playtime for each individual guest daily so that all of our guests are tired and happy at the end of each day. The length and number of playtime(s) will be dependant on the weather, age, breed of the pet, as well as specific needs for each guest .
We begin prepping our guest suppers and begin our evening chores at 3:00pm but the finishing of that prep and handing out of the dinners is usually between 4:45pm-5:00pm.
The dogs will rest after dinner between 5:00pm-6:30pm.  During that time the team will be in and out of the suites collecting dishes, adjusting blankets in the suites and ensuring they all get some love and cuddles before bed.
At around 6:30pm we begin taking out dogs for final bathroom breaks for the night.
We have all guests in their room by 7:00pm daily and close up the resort.  By this time it is pretty quiet in the resort.
The dogs are pooped!
They all had a ton of fun during the day and are looking forward to some rest.
Nighty night!
We have relaxation music on for our guests each night and there is also ambient light provided for their comfort.

During 7am-7pm we try to give our guests as much time possible to access their private outdoor run.  The amount of time the doors are open to their private runs will depend on weather.  We want to maintain a comfortable temperature at all times for our guests.  The doors are opened and closed during colder temps and warmer temps when heat and air conditioning is being used.
Private walks are also offered as an added service for those customers that may want a bit of extra one on one time for their pet each day.

"Does someone sleep at the resort with the dogs"
-no, we do not have staff on overnight with the dogs down at the resort.  The Shardlow family resides on the property and is just up a staircase from the resort. There is ALWAYS someone on property and there is security and alarms tied into the home and cell phones of the owners which are always monitored.  We have never had any issues with any guests being in their safe and secure suites at night. We are very open with our communication with customers and if we have any concerns with any guests we do reach out right away.  We would absolutely make adjustments to their sleeping arrangements if there was a pet that required special care during a visit.

"Can I put my two pets together in a suite?  How many pets can go into one suite at Kelowna Pet Resort?"
-yes, we do board pets together permitting that they will do well in the same space together and are from the same home or family.  We have many customers that have both a large and small dog.  We are able to board them in the same suite in our main facility called the 'Big Dog Barn'.  We do always want our customers to be aware of the risks of boarding two pets together.  We are very quick to assess any risk if two pets from the same home may not be adjusting well together.  We would reach out to the parents of the pets if we feel that sharing the space may not be beneficial for their pets.  For dogs and cats, we allow up to 3 members from the same home to share a suite permitting they will have adequate space and do well boarding together.  We find that sometimes dogs from the same home that are larger breed will require two suites.  We do have specialty adjoining suites just for this occasion.  Ask us about our 4 adjoining rooms.  We do not allow cats and dogs to stay together at our resort.  The cats facility is separate from our dog buildings, for safety reasons we feel the cats do best up in the Cat's Meow Motel away from the dogs.

"What does each day look like for a cat staying?"
-the times and routine for cats is also very important.  We start our cattery staff at 7am.  We begin by feeding all of our feline guests.  The staff ensure every guest has fresh water, food (whether wet or dry....or both!).
The feeding and cleaning routine can take up to 4 hours in our cattery.  During this time our staff will offer any cats that have suites booked with access to the catio patio turns out on those patios.  This is of course weather dependant each day.
We clean each and every room in our cattery.  The litter box is cleaned, floors swept and blankets fluffed.  They take time as they go through each room to brush, cuddle and spend time with each of our guests.
From 7:00am-around 11:00am daily one of our cat loving staff will be up there in our cattery tending to the needs of our feline guests and cleaning each and every suite in our cattery.  During 11:00am-3:00pm one staff member is dedicated to caring for our Lapdog Lodge guests and our cattery guests. During that time we go through the cattery often.
Between 3:00pm-7:00pm another one of our amazing team members will ensure all litter boxes get another freshening up and also feed and tidy our cattery at that time.

"Does anyone cuddle my cat?"
-absolutely!  The staff that work in our cattery are all cat fanatics!  They love cuddling, brushing and playing with our guests each day.  We work very hard to make each and every guest happy and comfortable during their stay with us, depending on what your cat will enjoy.

Pet Care and Veterinary needs:
"What if my pet needs to see a veterinarian during their stay?"
-it is a very rare occurrence at the resort but we have had guests that have required medical care during their stay.  UTI's, ear and eye infections and upset tummy can occur.  It is unlikely your pet will require care but if they should need care we are very responsive to their needs and our customers have been very happy with our treatment of their beloved pets.
If we notice any discrepancy in your pet's health we will reach out to you immediately.  We will ensure any small issues are discussed with you and dealt with in an appropriate manner.  If we can manage the issue during their stay we will but if we feel a vet does need to be involved we will ensure that this happens.
We will do our very best to take your pet to the vet they are used to seeing on a regular basis.  Sometimes this is not able to happen and we will need to see an alternate vet.  This is discussed with our pet 'pawrent' prior to them being seen somewhere else.
We are able to transport and pay for any invoices incurred for a vet visit.  The pet owner is responsible for the reimbursement of this cost when they return.
All vet visits are communicated and updates are given from there on in.  If you are unable to be reached we will reach out to your emergency contact second.  If both your contact and your emergency contact are unable to be reached we will make sure that the pet gets the care they need in any situation.

"Can I bring my dog's toys and bed?"
-you are welcome to bring a limited amount of belongings for pets' comfort during their visit.  We do ask that you leave your dog bed at home and ensure all items coming to the resort are able to washed in a standard washing machine.  We recommend bringing along a blanket that is easy to machine wash and is dryer friendly.  1-2 toys are fine if you are comfortable with your pet being in their suite with that toy unattended.
Chews, antlers, and rawhides are allowed but only if your pet is used to having these items and you are aware of the risks of those items with your pet unattended.  Please visit our 'what to bring' page for more information.

"Can you send a picture of my dog to me everyday?"
-unfortunately it would be too much of a task to be able to email each and every pet pawrent a photo each day.  The KPR team is wonderful at taking some photos each day but not every guest will have a photo taken each day.  We are happy to update you if you reach out to us at [email protected].  Some pawrents will email us more often and others not at all.  We are happy to update you at anytime if you reach out to us first.  We will send a photo if requested as well.

"What happens if my flight is delayed? What happens to my pet?"
-this happens!  Don't stress. Just get in touch with us as soon as you can to let us know of your delay in travel.  You can reach us at ([email protected]) or 250-861-5155.  We will ensure your pet has their accommodations until you are able to return.  It is always a good idea to send extra food for such occasions where you may be delayed.  We will pick up food if required but it is much easier if they come with extra to extend a stay.
